What’s New in the ABA Courses 40-Hour RBT Training (3rd Edition) — And Why It Matters

If you’re looking to become a Registered Behavior Technician® (RBT®) or need to complete your required 40-hour RBT training, staying current with BACB requirements is essential. At ABA Courses, we’re excited to introduce the 3rd Edition of our 40-Hour RBT Training, in Spanish and English, fully updated to align with the new RBT Task List (2nd Edition) and designed to better prepare you for real-world applied behavior analysis (ABA) work.

This update isn’t just a refresh — it’s a major upgrade that makes learning clearer, more practical, and more effective for today’s behavior technicians.

Fully Aligned With the BACB RBT Task List (3rd Edition)

The biggest update to our 3rd Edition RBT training is full alignment with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board® (BACB®) requirements. The BACB periodically updates the RBT Task List to reflect current best practices in ABA, and our course has been carefully revised to align with these expectations.

You can review the official standards directly on the Behavior Analyst Certification Board website:

By choosing an updated course, you reduce the risk of gaps in your knowledge and increase your confidence when preparing for the RBT Competency Assessment and RBT exam.

Expanded Ethics Content and Updated Terminology

Ethics is a cornerstone of effective and ethical ABA services. In the 3rd RBT Edition, we expanded and clarified content related to:

  • Professional boundaries
  • Client dignity and assent
  • Confidentiality and HIPAA considerations
  • Ethical decision-making in real-world scenarios

Furthermore, we updated terminology and expanded further on essential skills RBTs should learn, such as instructional control and pairing.

These updates help future RBTs better understand their responsibilities and prepare them to work professionally in clinical, home, and school-based settings. Check on the board’s website to see what is now included.

Improved Real-World Examples and Scenarios, and Explanations

One of the most common requests we hear from learners is: “Help me understand how this looks in real life.” We listened.

The new 3rd RBT edition includes:

  • Practical examples of ABA procedures
  • Clearer explanations of data collection methods
  • Updated behavior reduction and skill acquisition scenarios

These changes make complex ABA concepts easier to understand — especially for individuals new to the field.

Clearer, More Engaging Learning Experience

We’ve also improved the overall course structure and flow to support different learning styles. Updates include:

  • Refined lesson organization
  • Clearer definitions and terminology
  • Streamlined explanations without unnecessary jargon

Whether you’re brand new to ABA or completing training as part of a job requirement, the 3rd Edition is designed to be accessible, engaging, and efficient.

So what’s included in the RBT 3rd edition task list?

What is different in the 3.0 compared to the 2.0 RBT task list?

The 3.0 RBT Task List introduces 8 entirely new tasks, giving new insights into data reliability, ethical awareness, and cultural responsiveness. All very important areas for your work as an RBT.

New Tasks that were Added to the RBT 3rd edition Task List:

  • Identify Trends in Graphed Data
  • Data Calculation & Summarization (rate, mean duration, percentage)
  • Implement Positive and Negative Punishment Procedures (e.g., time-out)
  • Recognize Risks with Unreliable Data and Poor Fidelity
  • Understand Secondary Effects of Extinction and Punishment
  • Demonstrate Cultural Humility and Responsiveness in Service
  • Apply Core Ethical Principles for RBTs
  • Follow Gift-Giving and Receiving Guidelines.

Is the exam different for the RBT 3rd edition compared to the 2nd edition?

The RBT 3rd edition Exam has been adjusted to reflect these new priorities. While it still includes 75 scored questions, the weighting across domains has shifted to emphasize data accuracy, ethics, and applied practice.

What do these changes from RBT 2nd edition to RBT 3rd edition mean for me as an upcoming RBT?

Here’s what you should know:

  • Training: The 40-hour RBT training will be updated to cover new domains and tasks.
  • Assessment: The competency assessment will now test the practical application of data collection, ethics, and cultural awareness.
  • Exam: Starting in 2026, all RBT exam questions will align with the 3.0 content outline unless you already applied before 12/31/25 (which means you can still be tested for the RBT 2nd edition)
  • Renewal: Certification maintenance will emphasize professional development and continuing education.
